Historically Denmark's dominant party, but won its lowest result since 1910 at the 24 March 2026 election. A liberal people's party with roots in farming and business.
Venstre is Denmark's historically dominant centre-right liberal party, having produced twelve prime ministers since the parliamentary breakthrough of 1901. At the 24 March 2026 election the party won 10.1 per cent and 18 seats, its lowest result since 1910. Under Troels Lund Poulsen, it is working to rebuild as the responsible centre of right-of-centre politics.
Business owners, rural populations, and the conservative middle class. Strongest in Jutland and rural municipalities. Historically Denmark's broadest centre-right party.
Key policy areas
Defence and security
Troels Lund Poulsen serves as defence minister and this is the party's strongest card. Full backing for 3.5 per cent of GDP on defence by 2033 and active support for Ukraine.
Welfare and healthcare
"There must be competent and caring hands when you and your loved ones need them." A strengthened health service and better psychiatric care are Venstre's social-policy pledges.
Tax freeze and fiscal responsibility
A firm no to new property taxes and a promise that Danes will not pay more in tax. Pro-business policies and stable conditions for enterprises.
Immigration and crime
A harder line under Troels Lund Poulsen: "A tougher stance on criminal immigrants" and stricter integration requirements.
Agriculture and business
Historically rooted as the party of the farming sector. Balancing environmental regulation with agricultural competitiveness is a perennial tension.
Positions on policy topics
Wants stricter family reunification rules and higher requirements for language skills and financial self-support.
Supports the climate targets but emphasises business competitiveness and technological solutions over bans and high levies.
Wants to cut taxes and streamline the public sector. Believes lower taxes free up resources and generate growth.
Wants to streamline and open up for more private co-financing, but is not opposed to welfare as a principle.
Pro-EU with emphasis on the single market and free trade. Supports NATO as the cornerstone of Danish security.
Wants to increase sentences and give the police better tools for investigation and prosecution.
Wants to free up the market and ease building regulations to get more homes built faster.
Wants more academic rigour and fewer experiments in schools. Better conditions for vocational training and independent schools.
Wants to invest in mental health services and shorter waiting times. Troels Lund Poulsen has highlighted healthcare as a top priority.
Top priority. Troels Lund Poulsen serves as Defence Minister. Supports 3.5% of GDP by 2033 and full NATO commitment.
Pro-business is a core identity. Wants to cut taxes, reduce bureaucracy and improve conditions for companies.
Wants to give businesses more flexibility and open up for more individual wage-setting.
Wants to modernise elderly care with free choice, private providers and better resource management.
Wants to accelerate digitalisation in the public sector and business with fewer bureaucratic barriers.
