CONTEXTDenmark's net contribution to the EU is the amount paid into the EU budget minus what Denmark receives back (agricultural subsidies, structural funds, etc.). Denmark is a "net payer" -- it pays more in than it gets back. The increase reflects both Danish prosperity growth (contributions are GNI-based) and a growing EU budget. The contribution amounts to roughly 0.5% of GDP.

CONTEXTNATO's official target is for all member states to spend at least 2% of GDP on defence. Denmark met this target for the first time in 2024. The chart shows selected NATO members for perspective. The high US share reflects the country's global military role. Estonia, Poland and Latvia are the highest in Europe due to their geographical proximity to Russia.
