A social-liberal party that often holds the balance of power when governments are formed. Known for an open immigration line, a strong EU stance and progressive values.
Radikale Venstre (the Danish Social Liberal Party) was founded in 1905 as a breakaway from Venstre and is one of Denmark's oldest parties, with a unique dual profile: centrist on economic redistribution and clearly left-leaning on social values. Historically it has served as the "tongue on the scale" in Danish coalition politics, but it lost that role to Moderaterne in 2022. Under Martin Lidegaard, the party is trying to reposition itself as the party of climate and youth.
Women, younger voters, and well-educated academics with liberal and climate-conscious views. Strongest in the cities and among people with advanced degrees.
Key policy areas
Climate and green transition
The party's top priority. Ambitious CO2 targets, the most far-reaching carbon tax on agriculture, and sustainable consumption.
Liberal refugee policy
An opponent of strict asylum policy and one of the most prominent pro-integration, human-rights-oriented parties. Humane treatment over rejection.
The EU and Europe
One of the most pro-EU parties in the Folketing. A stronger EU on security, climate, and trade is a core issue.
Education
"Everyone has the right and the duty to be educated." A central plank since the party's founding: education as a prerequisite for democratic participation.
Democracy and popular governance
The right to referendums, transparency, and the protection of minorities. The party's historic ties to the Danish Constitution give this a special resonance.
Positions on policy topics
Critical of Danish asylum policy and wants refugees assessed individually in accordance with international law.
Very ambitious climate profile. Wants to move faster than the government and lead EU cooperation on greener standards.
Wants a green tax reform and to maintain an effective, though not necessarily larger, state.
Wants to prioritise mental health services, early intervention and equality within the welfare system.
Strongly pro-EU and wants to move towards deeper integration, including common asylum and climate policy.
Wants criminal justice policy based on evidence and prevention rather than reactive sentencing increases.
Wants social housing construction that matches demand and ensures low-income groups can stay in the cities.
Education is a historic core issue. Wants to invest in schools, research and lifelong learning.
Wants to invest in mental health services and ensure equal access to treatment regardless of location and income.
Pro-Ukraine and pro-NATO but wants diplomatic initiatives in parallel with rearmament.
Pro-business with a focus on innovation and the knowledge economy. Wants to invest in research and green growth.
Supports the flexicurity model and wants more investment in upskilling and early intervention for the unemployed.
Wants to prioritise dignity, prevention and mental well-being for the elderly.
Pro-digitalisation and wants to use EU cooperation for joint AI regulation and green digitalisation.
